Narrative: A Troubled Mind

A Troubled Mind

Narrative

Tagline: A mind of frustrations brings out the worst in ourselves.

Logline: Teenager Bryce is having problems at home and at school. Step-father Ryan needs to help Bryce find his way, but not before he realizes he may be part of the problem.

Script:
Int/Bryce's bedroom
Bryce enters his bedroom mentally exhausted, backpack in his right hand dragging next to his side. He drops the backpack on the floor at the corner of his bed then flops down on his bed.

Bryce:
(Long sigh/groan)... why me?

A couple minutes later Bryce's step-father Ryan steps into the doorway of Bryce's room. Ryan has a look of frustration and annoyance on his face. Ryan shakes his head softly as he glances throughout the room.

Ryan:
Got any homework?

Bryce: Yeah. A little.

Ryan: Then you probably need to be working on it rather than laying down. Then when you're done you can clean your room. It's nasty. I'll be back to check on you shortly.

Ryan turns and walks out of the doorway down the hall before Bryce could muster up a word. Bryce puts on his head phones with a heavy sigh and annoyed look on his face, rolls over while covering up with his blanket and starts watching Youtube.

About twenty minutes later Ryan quietly makes his way to Bryce's room and peers through the doorway to find Bryce sleeping with his room uncleaned. Ryan becomes frustrated.

Ryan: Bryce! (no response from Bryce) Bryce! (louder)

Bryce starts to slowly come to life and sits up looking around to see what is going on.

Ryan: What's going on! Did you get your homework done?

Bryce: No. I'm gonna do it later.

Ryan: No, it needs to be done now. Otherwise, it's never going to get done. Knowing how you are...You also still need to clean your room. I can barely walk in here and you have food and trash in here.

Bryce sighs and looks down at his phone.

Ryan: Get moving. I'll be back to check on you.

Ryan turns and acts like he is exiting down the hall but instead goes to the end of the hall and quietly makes his way back to edge of the doorway and listens for Bryce to start moving. After a couple of minutes of not hearing any movement Ryan steps back into the doorway and confronts Bryce.

Ryan: Why aren't you moving? The quicker you get your stuff done the quicker you will get to do what you want to do. Lets go!

Bryce: (Angry now) O my God! Go away!

Ryan: No! You need to get your stuff done!

Bryce: Just leave me alone! (Yelling now)

Ryan: (Shaking head) Uh-uh. (Walks over to Playstation console and takes the only controller.) You'll get this back after your stuff is done.

Bryce: Aaaagh! I hate you! (Chucks a pillow at Ryan as Ryan is walking out the door. It misses.)

Int/Bryce's Room(cut to)Living Room
Ryan heads out to the living room and slowly takes a seat on the couch and sighs. He leans his head back into the couch and ponders. Ryan shakes his head and leans forward clutching his hands, his eyes going side to side in thought. Ryan closes his eyes and sighs then stands up and heads back towards Bryce's room.

Int/Bryce's Room
Ryan walks to Bryce's doorway then stops. Ryan knocks on the framing since there is no door.

Ryan: Hey... (Ryan walks over to the bed where Bryce is still sitting and looking into his phone and sits down a the end of the bed.) I apologize for being do demanding, I am just trying to teach you some responsibility, but I realize that I am going about it the wrong way. I want you to do better. I know you are struggling with school a little, So, I am trying to keep you on top of your schoolwork. And.. as far a your room goes.. do you really want bugs and mice to live in here with you?

Bryce: (Under his breath) No.

Ryan: Alright. So what's really going on? Is there something else that is bothering you?

Bryce: (shrugging) I don't know...

Ryan: Well you seem to be napping a lot more than usual and I'm worried that something is bothering you. I would like to help you out if I can. So... anything come to mind?

Bryce: (Sighs and fidgets a bit) I feel lost.

Ryan: What do you mean?

Bryce: I just feel like I don't want to do anything and I feel kind of trapped.

Ryan: Trapped here or how do you mean?

Bryce: Like... I feel like I can't do anything without making someone angry and I feel like I can't ever hang out with friends either because they are busy, or there parents won't let them, or we have something going on.

Ryan: I understand. And I would love to let you go hang out with your friends. I have no problem with that, but you still have to make sure to care of your responsibilities. We don't have you do too much here because we know you technically shouldn't have to, but every little bit helps us out. Do you understand?

Bryce: Yeah.

Ryan: Ok. I'll tell you what. If you can at least get your homework taken care of I will help you pick-up your room and maybe we can go see a movie as a family tonight. How does that sound?

Bryce: Sure.

Ryan: Cool. Things will get better. We just need to talk to each other when we are having troubles. K bud?

Bryce: K

Ryan: Ok. Come get me when you finish your homework.

Bryce: Alright

Ryan pats Bryce on the knee then gets up and walks out, while looking back once to see Bryce's reaction. Bryce scoots himself out of the bed to his backpack and starts gathering supplies for doing his work. Ryan gives a satisfying smile.

Me talking to my brother on the phone about how school is going.

The world today seems absolutely crackers
coworkers were singing this phrase from a song called I like Chinese

You're such a wideload.
Wife talking to our younger of two dogs after the dog just ate the other dog's food that was left.

A person is a person, no matter how small
Heard it while watching Horton hears a Who with my daughter.

This is the sweat of a confident man.
Heard this from a radio commercial while driving to my stepson's Tai Kwon Do practice.

INT- A HIGH SCHOOL, BOYS LOCKER ROOM, AFTERNOON

Tim busts through the locker room doors with two of his friends Bob and Roger. As the boys go to their individual lockers, Tim smacks Bob's rear then looks at his hand in disgust.

Tim
Awww...grosss...you're such a wideload Bob! You're so sweaty.

Bob
This is the sweat of a confident man.

Bob makes a heroic pose with his hands on his hips looking up towards the ceiling. Roger attempts a strike at Bob's private section with a towel.

Roger
Good luck finding a woman with that worm

Bob starts to turn beet red scowls at Tim and Roger as they crack out laughing.

Bob
A person is a person, no matter how small! I can get a woman!

The boys continue to pick on each other as they are getting dressed for football practice. Once dressed Tim's face becomes more serious and worried.

Tim
The world today is absolutely crackers,

Roger
Why do you say that?

Tim
Apparently, starting today, a draft is going out.

Roger
Well isn't that fartastic... I mean fantastic.

Tim
Right.

The three boys leave the locker room after making a quick change in emotions, by returning to their teasing and lively attitudes, to get themselves in the mood for practicing some football.

Documentary Subject

Nancy Johnson is my supervisor in the Air Force. Nancy takes on many tasks besides just taking on the role as my supervisor. Some of these tasks include photography for the squadron, member of Top Three, dental assisting, and being a Wingman,

I believe Master Sergeant Johnson would be a great person to interview for a documentary. We get would get to see what it is like to be in Nancy's shoes in all the roles she is part of as a supervisor in the United States Air Force.

Possible questions:

1) What brought you to the Air Force?
2) How long do you intend to stay in the military?
3) What do you do for the Air Force currently?
4) How long did it take you to achieve your position as a supervisor?
5) How many people do you supervise?
6) How are you able to manage so many people?
7) Besides supervising what kind of duties do you perform in your position?
8) Is it normal for someone in your position to take on so many duties/tasks?
9) Do you ever get deployed?
10) Is it difficult going back and forth between civilian life and military life?
